Who Possesses Who?

The FNaF franchise is well known for its cast of characters. As most fans of the series know, these characters are usually possessed by the souls of dead children murdered by the main antagonist of FNaF, William Afton. It can be confusing to keep track of which child possesses which character. This article compiles a list of the possessed characters and evidence for why we believe the specific children are matched with the specific characters.

Freddy jumpscare

Who possesses Freddy Fazbear – Gabriel

  • Evidence:
    • FNaF 3’s “Happiest Day” minigame shows a series of children’s spirits being set free, one of which is associated with Freddy’s mask.
    • The gravestone for Gabriel is seen in FNaF 6 (Pizzeria Simulator) in the “Lorekeeper” ending, connecting him to Freddy.
    • Gabriel is one of the five children believed to be murdered in the Missing Children Incident. His appearance, often depicted in fan art and implied in the games, aligns with Freddy’s role as the primary animatronic.
Bonnie jumpscare

Who possesses Bonnie the Bunny – Jeremy

  • Evidence:
    • The name “Jeremy” appears in various contexts throughout the series, such as the night guard in FNaF 2 and FNaF: Help Wanted. However, Jeremy’s name is most commonly associated with Bonnie’s spirit.
    • In FNaF 3’s minigames, Jeremy’s spirit is connected to Bonnie’s mask in the “Happiest Day” minigame.
    • The gravestone with Jeremy’s name, seen in FNaF 6, strongly links his spirit to Bonnie.
Chica jumpscare

Who possesses Chica the Chicken – Susie

  • Evidence:
    • FNaF 6 (Pizzeria Simulator) confirms Susie as the child who possesses Chica. This is revealed in the final “Lorekeeper” ending, where the gravestones of the murdered children are revealed.
    • FNaF 6 also reveals that Susie was the first child to be lured and murdered by William Afton, under the guise of helping her find her lost dog.
    • In the FNaF 3 minigames, Susie’s spirit is tied to Chica’s mask during the “Happiest Day” sequence.
Foxy in the office

Who possesses Foxy the Pirate – Fritz

  • Evidence:
    • Fritz is another child whose name appears on the gravestone in the “Lorekeeper” ending of FNaF 6, linking him to Foxy.
    • In FNaF 3, Fritz is associated with Foxy’s mask during the “Happiest Day” minigame, providing further evidence of this possession.
    • Fans speculate that Fritz may have been one of the more aggressive children, aligning with Foxy’s erratic and fast-paced behavior in the games.
Golden Freddy killscreen

Who possesses Golden Freddy (Fredbear) – Cassidy and Possibly Evan Afton

  • Evidence for Cassidy:
    • Cassidy is often referred to as the “Vengeful Spirit,” a character introduced more prominently in FNaF: Ultimate Custom Night (UCN). Cassidy’s role in keeping William Afton trapped in an eternal purgatory suggests a deep connection to Golden Freddy.
    • The name “Cassidy” appears in The Survival Logbook, a canonical tie-in book that contains hints pointing to her possession of Golden Freddy. Cassidy is depicted as a particularly vengeful soul, likely connected to Fredbear’s ability to manifest supernaturally, often glitching and defying the rules of the game.
    • In FNaF 3, the “Happiest Day” minigame shows a figure donning Golden Freddy’s mask, heavily implying Cassidy’s connection.
  • Evidence for Evan Afton (Crying Child):
    • Many fans believe that Evan, the Crying Child from FNaF 4, could also be tied to Golden Freddy or Fredbear due to his traumatic experience at the hands of Fredbear during the Bite of ’83.
    • The theory stems from Evan’s close connection to Fredbear in FNaF 4, where Fredbear’s plush is the child’s protector, and ultimately, his destroyer. This connection suggests that Evan’s soul could be part of Golden Freddy, shared with Cassidy.
    • This dual-possession theory is based on hints from The Survival Logbook and narrative elements in FNaF: Help Wanted and Ultimate Custom Night that tie both Evan and Cassidy to William Afton’s torment.
Lefty in the alley

Who possesses Puppet (Lefty) – Charlotte Emily (Charlie)

  • Evidence:
    • The Puppet’s identity as Charlotte, Henry Emily’s daughter, is confirmed in FNaF 6 (Pizzeria Simulator). Henry’s dialogue, as well as the “Lorekeeper” ending, confirm that the Puppet’s spirit is that of Charlie, who was the first victim of William Afton.
    • In FNaF 2, the death minigame shows Charlotte being murdered outside the pizzeria by Afton. The Puppet’s mission to protect the other children suggests a strong maternal or guardian instinct, tying it to Charlie.
    • The Puppet’s role as a protector is also echoed in FNaF 3 and Ultimate Custom Night, where Charlie is hinted to be the one attempting to free the souls of the other children.
Springtrap in the menu

Who possesses Springtrap – William Afton

  • Evidence:
    • Springtrap, the main antagonist in FNaF 3, is William Afton himself. This is visually confirmed when the player sees Afton being trapped in the Spring Bonnie suit during the minigames in FNaF 3.
    • The backstory of Afton’s death by spring-lock failure is a critical part of FNaF lore, and Springtrap is the result of his soul being trapped inside the suit he used to kill the children.
    • FNaF: Sister Location and FNaF: Help Wanted further explore Afton’s survival as a digital entity (Glitchtrap) and his transformation into Scraptrap in FNaF 6 (Pizzeria Simulator).
Balloon Boy in the air vent

Who possesses Balloon Boy, JJ, and Others – No Confirmed Possessions

  • Evidence:
    • Balloon Boy (BB) and other ancillary characters like JJ do not have a confirmed child soul attached to them in the same way that the core animatronics do. While some fans have speculated that they could be connected to missing children, there’s no solid evidence from the games or books to confirm this.
    • These characters seem to serve more as distractions or helpers to the main animatronics, particularly in FNaF 2 and Ultimate Custom Night.
Shadow Freddy i camra

Who possesses Shadow Freddy and Shadow Bonnie (RWQFSFASXC) – Unknown, But Possibly Linked to William Afton’s Victims

  • Evidence:
    • The Shadow animatronics remain some of the most mysterious characters in the series. Shadow Freddy is often associated with Golden Freddy, and some theorize that he may represent a lingering remnant of the agony caused by William Afton’s murders.
    • Shadow Bonnie, who appears in FNaF 2 and FNaF 3, is theorized to be another manifestation of a child’s tortured soul, though there is little direct evidence connecting either Shadow animatronic to a specific child.
    • Fans speculate that the Shadow animatronics may be symbolic of the immense suffering caused by Afton, acting as ghostly reminders of the horrors he unleashed.
Circus Baby in gallery

Who possesses Circus Baby – Elizabeth Afton

  • Evidence:
    • Elizabeth Afton’s possession of Circus Baby is confirmed in FNaF: Sister Location, where her tragic story unfolds. Elizabeth was killed by the Baby animatronic after disobeying her father, William Afton, and approaching the animatronic despite his warnings.
    • Circus Baby’s dialogue and personality directly reference Elizabeth, especially in Sister Location, where Baby describes being trapped and manipulated by her own father’s creations.
    • Elizabeth’s possession of Baby is also hinted at in FNaF 6, where Baby returns as Scrap Baby, embodying Elizabeth’s resentment and desire for control.
Funtime Freddy i cams

Who possesses Funtime Freddy and Others in Sister Location – Controlled by Remnant, But No Named Possessions

  • Evidence:
    • The Funtime animatronics, including Funtime Freddy, Funtime Foxy, and Ballora, seem to be controlled by the remnant, a substance created from the agony and suffering of souls. While these animatronics do not appear to be directly possessed by the same children from the original pizzerias, they still exhibit behavior and intelligence driven by Afton’s manipulations.
    • Ballora, in particular, is speculated to be possessed by someone connected to William Afton’s life, possibly his wife, due to her maternal and sorrowful demeanor. However, this theory remains unconfirmed.
